Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch

You wouldn’t have known that Pietro and Wanda Maximoff were twins, unless they told you themselves.

Pietro was tall, slender, and easily identified by his full head of silverish hair. Most people waited half a century for their hair color to fade. Pietro’s hair was pure white by the time he was a toddler. He wasn’t the most extroverted of personalities, preferring his own company or that of his twin sister Wanda. Wanda was slightly shorter, auburn-haired and, many would say, friendlier than Pietro, who often came across as moody and quick-tempered.

The twins were born in the Eastern European country of Transia. Each possessed powers that both protected them and, as they grew, increasingly made them the objects of suspicion, prejudice, even hatred.

Pietro could run at superhuman speeds. He was one of the fastest beings on Earth, breaking the sound barrier at maximum velocity. Wanda’s mutant ability—her “Hex,” as she called it—gave her various uncanny powers that she could not always control. In time, these would include enabling her to fly, project energy blasts from her hands, and even alter reality to suit her purposes.

Wanda was revealed to be a mutant when local prejudice and superstition caused her such stress that her powers went out of control. An angry mob tried to burn her as a witch, but Pietro dashed to her defense at top speed, thereby also revealing himself a mutant.

As Wanda and Pietro were surrounded by threatening faces, a figure appeared in the sky, scattering the crowd with an awe-inspiring display of magnetic powers. He declared himself to be Magneto and said that, henceforth, Pietro and Wanda would be under his protection.

From then on Magneto served as the twins’ protector, mentor, and teacher. He had no concerns with concealing his mutant abilities or hiding himself away; he swore to protect all mutants by any means necessary. As Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, Pietro and Wanda became members of Magneto’s mutant resistance group, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, helping him take full control of the Republic of Santo Marco.

In time, however, Pietro began to lose trust in Magneto and wonder if the violence of his cause was in the best interests of him and his twin sister. Matters came to a head when Pietro discovered a photo of a young Erik Lehnsherr that revealed him with a head of white hair, just like his own. Pietro demanded Magneto remove his helmet. In all the time the twins had been under Magneto’s protection, he had never taken off his helmet in front of them. Magneto swore this was to shield them and the Brotherhood from his former friend Charles Xavier, the world’s most powerful telepath, known as Professor X. He was the leader of the mutant super hero team the X-Men, who, believing in peaceful coexistence and cooperation between mutants (Homo superior ) and ordinary humans (Homo sapiens ), had become frequent foes of Magneto’s Brotherhood. Pietro was adamant, angrily brushing aside Magneto’s objections and insisting he remove his helmet.
